Team CactusMamas 2007Welcome to CactusMamas.com

We are doin' DC in 2009!!!
Stay tuned as more information is available

The Cactus Mamas started out as a group of strong women employed by or related to the National Park Service. Originally, we came from Southern Arizona, but are now proud to host mamas (and a few brave papas) from all over the country. We have all chosen to walk for the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk for Breast Cancer, some for the first time in their lives, others a repeat performance.

We will walk 60 miles over three days this October, in the city of Washington DC.

Not only are we donating our sweat and endurance, each of us has agreed to raise $2,300 to be donated directly to the foundation in support of research, treatment and education for the fight against breast cancer. We each walk for different reasons, but with thesame goals.  To make breast cancer disappear forever.

Please scroll down to meet the Mamas. There is a link for each persons direct 3-day fundraising website.
Thank you for your time and your generosity.

Because EVERYONE deserves a Lifetime.

Meet the 2009 Mamas!

Andy Fisher (captain)

I can't imagine not walking... my reasons are the same. Everyone deserves a lifetime is etched on my heart and I walk to make it true
Again this year:
I walk because I love people who are affected by this disease.
I walk to inspire others.
I walk for my friend who is already gearing up for the fight, even though she is cancer-free.
I walk to keep it that way!
I walk because my friends need me to, whether they know it or not.
I walk because young children should never have to bury their mothers.
I walk so my healthy friends stay that way.
I walk because my friend Jackie asked me too, after the 2007 event by the pool, with bloody marys in our hands.
I walk because she will not be walking with our team again.
I walk because I cannot walk away, not anymore.

I want you to walk with me this year...

(Jama is the one in the middle,
from the 2005 3-day walk)

Jama Daves

This will be my 4th year to participate in this amazing event as a Cactus Mama!! I'm so proud to walk this walk with such a wonderful group of women (and Brian again!). I would like to stop here on such a positive note, but I can't.

I am walking because cancer sucks. I think this word "cancer" is a much nastier word than any 4-letter word I can think of. I want it to go away and I feel that I am helping in a very small way by participating in the 3-Day. 2 years ago, I said I was "walking for Bridges, Jackie, Celeste, Lisa, & Montana who are true fighters". Isn't it sad that 2 of these "true fighters", Bridges & Celeste, are no longer with us? I'm walking so we won't lose any more of our "true fighters". I'm walking to beat cancer.

Lisa and me on Day one of
3 Day, 2006

Julie Kovacs

This year the Cactus Mamas are moving to DC! We decided it was time for some new scenery as we walked the streets promoting breast cancer awareness and research and thought this of all years was the one to be in Washington. So, we are heading east for year number five and will be walking the streets around the Capitol.

Please join us in the blisters and fun. If not, as always, any donation is appreciated. You all have supported this cause and me for five years now and YOU ROCK! I could not do this without you.

Sherry Wood

It's hard to believe that this will be my FIFTH year walking in the 3-Day! I really thought I would just participate in this event for one year. What I didn't realize was just how inspired I would be by the people I came into contact with both on the walk and in the fund raising effort. In 2004 I walked in the memory of two NPS friends (Pam Meck & Anna Booth) who had both lost their battle with breast cancer. In 2005 I lost my uncle Bill Wood to cancer. So last year I walked in his memory and with the hope that we can find a cure for all cancer during our lifetime.

In 2005, Team Cactus Mamas was formed and I was honored to be a part of that team. Now here we are in 2008, the Cactus Mamas are coming together again and with some new members that I can't wait to meet. One breast cancer survivor who walked with us last year is going to be a crewmember this year. Wow, you should see how hard those people work! So a big thanks goes out to Roberta! It is truly a privilege to know such strong and courageous women. To all of you who donated last year and to any of you that are considering making a donation again this year to such a worthy cause, thank you from the bottom of my heart. We couldn't do it without you! .

Me at the end of Day 3

Lisa Carrico

This year is my second as a Cactus Mama and I am walking to honor and support two amazing women who are fighting breast cancer: my Aunt Treo and my friend Lisa. Both are shining examples of grace, courage and strength.

As I train for our 3-day, 60 mile walk in November, I take each step with the hope that one day there will be NO MORE CANCER. Please help me raise funds for cancer research. Together, step by step and dollar by dollar, we will make a difference. We will help find a cure.

Brian Olson

A dear friend, Lisa DeFabrizio, a single mother was diagnosed in 2006 and had a mastectomy with the related treatments. Lisa is a survivor. My mom has been a survivor for more than 40 years and will be 92 this year.

Last year I decided to make a difference. More men need to be involved with finding a cure for breast cancer. This dreaded disease affects the lives of both women and men, albeit in different ways. Men have wives, sisters, mothers and friends that are affected by breast cancer. In 2006 I participated in the AvonWalk in Denver and the 3 Day Walk in Dallas. Although I thought I felt I was physically prepared, emotionally I wasn’t. The walks were a very moving emotional experience. It provided a safe environment where the walkers could share their unique experiences with each other.

This year I will be doing the AvonWalk in Denver and the 3 Day Walks in Dallas and Arizona. In Dallas I will be on the Tri-kes team (Lisa DeFabrizio’s company) and in Arizona I will join the Cactus Mama’s. I am honored to be a part of the Cactus Mama's and that too will be an emotional experience. It will be a privilege to walk with these strong and courageous women.

Thank you to everyone who is donating money & allowing me to participate in this emotional journey. Your generous support overwhelms me.

Please support my team members.

I am walking this year, my first time, for two reasons.

First - There are many amazing women I know who are breast cancer survivors, but one dear friend is still fighting her battle. Her name is Sue and she was first diagnosed approximately 20 years ago when her daughters were little. The doctors stated after chemo and other treatments, that she was cancer free. During a regular check up years later, more cancer was found and it had silently spread to other areas of her body. She has tried many experimental therapies after chemo did nothing for her. So far there has been no change in the size of the tumors and yet through all this she has managed to be one of the most amazing woman I know.

She is compassionate, optimistic, always thinking of and helping others. No matter what it is, Sue is there to help or support her friends and family. I hope to one day, be as good a person as she is. Keep fighting Sue, I'll fight with you!

Second - my sisters. I am one of four girls and the statics are not in our favor. One out of eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. I refuse to let my sisters become one of those statics without fighting for a cure. So, I walk - blisters and all!
